Description

Please read this description so you know what the hell you're looking at. kthxbye :)

So this is the final project for my Metalsmithing class I took this past semester. It was fun, all the while frustrating. The picture was taken by my 'professor'... being that he still has it. He wants to put it in the student show (kinda against my wishes haha).

The premise for the project was to make a 'music box' that does not actually play a song, but represents a selected song. I chose the song Nightingale from my favorite CD of all time, Stay What You Are by Saves the Day.

Here are the lyrics, if you're interested:

=========================================
And I will flail under these lights that seep down from the bitter sky tonight
and I will kick and beat my wrists together
and feel an ocean breathing waves, feel them licking at my face.
Ceilings don't exist and there are no floors beneath me.
If I were king of this night, would you become my queen?

I'll have to walk a thousand miles just to find the ground deserving of your feet.
You could throw me down and walk on me
and I'd just look on through my love and through the haze.

The nightingales are singing out.
Yeah, they're calling out our marriage to our subjects on their knees.
Their jewelry is thrown into the air.
They sigh at the release as their shackles hit the ground.
The trumpets call out now.
We're home at last.

CHORUS
And I hope, your majesty, that you like your position.
I'll do everything I can to keep you by my side
and I'll stare off through the darkness to find us a kingdom.
Just kiss me before I go.
=========================================

So... I guess I'll talk about the box now. It's made of copper and brass (the copper is the penny-colored metal and the brass is the trumpet-colored metal lol) and put together with silver solder, a hinge, jump rings, and one tube rivet for the lid to slide off. There are also two rings made of silver that are sitting atop the drawbridge which are in the shape of a king's crown and a queen's tiara. To bring it all to completion, I lined the entire inside and bottom with royal purple velvet, using spray adhesive which sucks. You can see that it's peeling off. My teacher really liked the velvet and was petting it during the critique. lol

Since I didn't take this picture (he emailed it to me last night), it's not situated exactly how I would've done it. He put the crowns on the brass drawbridge which makes them reflect yellowish. They usually sit inside the box, but, of course you wouldn't be able to see them down there. It probably would've been better to put them on the outside, beside the box. Also, he didn't bother to clean off any fingerprints which I would have done obsessively. :D The lighting on it isn't great since you can't see the purpleness all that well, but it's a good shot, I think.

I might be uploading more pictures of this later when I get it back. I also should upload some pictures of my other two projects. :nod:

Hope you like it! Comment to let me know!!! :) You should at least be glad that I'm uploading some other kind of art besides digital. heehee
